Senior apartment is an age-restricted
multiunit housing with self-contained living units for older adults who are
able to care for themselves. Usually no additional services such as meals or
transportation are provided.
Senior apartments are found
in many communities, some are under federal housing guidelines and will only
accept low income seniors, but most are privately owned. They can vary in
terms of services but typically offer apartment living and services designed
specifically for independent active seniors 55 and older. Since many of
these residences are designed for active seniors, most do not offer meal
service, housekeeping or medical assistance.
Senior apartment complexes are usually
located near senior centers, parks, shopping malls, golf courses and public
transportation. Many offer van services along with monthly road trips to
shows and casinos.
Many senior apartment complexes are
subsidized by the Dept. of
Housing Urban Development (HUD) and calling them will sometimes be
useful. A toll free number is 1-888-466-3487. The problem is that this type
of apartment tends to be rented at below market rates and usually has a long
waiting list.
It is recommended contact the senior apartments with the telephone numbers or email addresses to obtain specific detailed information about their services and prices before your visit. There are three pricing categories of apartments (although all may not be available in any one market):
Market rate - They offer unit size and numbers of bedrooms and baths as non-age-restricted rentals in the area at a competitive monthly rate, or occasionally 10-15% under general age-occupancy market-rate rents. The senior orientation of the age restricted community may however offer different amenities and other advantages geared to the needs and preferences of seniors.
