The bed is 12" from the floor when it's at the lowest position. Usually a hospital mattress is between 5" and 8" thick depending on the type of mattress you choose. The innerspring mattress that we offer as optional one for this bed is 7" thick. So the total is 23" from the ground. Yes, the top of the mattress clear the rail when the rail is in the down position. If this bed height is not low enough for you, you may consider our Lo-Max bed AZ4804.
