 Sliding transfer benches make shower even easier and have become more and more widely used.
They have become the most popular bathroom safety products for elderly
persons and those with handicapping diseases. There are several options available
and your decision will be based upon the size of the seat and the ease with which you can operate the slide mechanism.
Some general aspects to think of when select a transfer bench or sliding
transfer bench include:
Your Weight: As you can see, the transfer benches have specific weight limitations, so recognize that your personal weight is an important factor when
selecting a bathtub transfer bench.
Bench Legs: For most of the transfer
benches
including the non-sliding or sliding transfer
benches, the four legs are positioned so that two legs are on the outside of the bathtub and two legs are on the inside the bathtub.
For some models, e.g. those tub mount models, two legs of one side of the
sliding transfer bench are on the inside of bathtub and the other side of the
transfer bench is mounted on the tub wall. This design is to minimize the
splash of water out of the tub which may cause slippery
and to save space in bathroom.
 Bench Depth/Length: Bathtub sliding transfer benches are available in different
depths and lengths. To determine the proper depth, you need to be seated. Then take your body measurement from the back of your hips to just behind your
knees. The transfer bench depth should be as close to that measurement as
possible; To determine the proper length, measure from the far inside wall of your bathtub to the outside
wall. This is the minimum length needed. Depending on the bathroom space,
extra long model may be used for longer sliding distance.
Seat Materials: Bathtub sliding transfer benches are available with plastic
molded or padded seats. You can consider purchasing a padded model, if you have trouble sitting on a firm
surface.
Cut-Out Seat: For patient with fecal incontinence, a model with
cut-out seat provides extra convenience.
