Selection of Shower Wheelchairs
A shower wheelchair addresses
the personal hygienic need of people with spinal cord injuries and other individuals with disabilities.
It is designed to maximize patient independence and reduce caregiver
strain. Such a chair is usually built of rust-free materials such as
PVC, aluminum or stainless steel. The wheels of the chair allow the
caregiver to transfer the patient in and out of the tub or shower with
less effort.
Usually the seat of a
shower wheel chair contain a commode opening cut-out so that the chair
can be used both over a toilet and in the shower. Some models come with
a center piece to fill the cut-out on the seat. Such a design offers the
patient higher level of comfort during long term seating so that the
shower wheelchair can be also used as a regular wheelchair.
These shower wheelchairs
are commonly used in the nursing
centers, departments of physical medicine & rehabilitation in
hospitals and homes. For the more than 200,000 persons with spinal cord dysfunction in the United States and the countless other Americans living with a disability,
a commode / shower wheelchairs is a safe and dignified way to manage basic hygiene
needs. |
